Kyle Kirts is a legal specialist with a decade and a half of experience. Based out of Dayton, Ohio, Kyle T. Kirts also likes participating in 5K running events. In 2013, he came in third in the 40 to 49 age group for men at the Mattoon Knights of Columbus 5K event.
The Mattoon Knights of Columbus 5K and 10K races are held annually in Mattoon, Illinois, at the Knights of Columbus Hall. A 5K walk and a fun run are also a part of the activities. In 2014, the one-mile fun run will be held at noon and will be followed by the 5K and 10K races and the 5K walk at 12:15 p.m. Awards will be presented an hour later at the September 20th event.
To prepare for a 5K or 10K race, it’s important to wear running apparel that is comfortable and has already been worn at least a couple of times. Steer away from wearing too many layers. A good rule to follow: dress as if the temperature is about 15 degrees below the actual reading on the thermometer.
Runners should develop a pre-race routine as well. To avoid injuries, running experts advise runners to stretch and lightly jog for about 10 minutes. Dynamic stretching is advised over static stretching when preparing for a race event. While dynamic stretching involves stretches that replicate sports-type movements, static stretching includes stretches that are done for several seconds, or while the body remains still or motionless.
